What we need is ours for the asking

Easter 5A - Acts 7:55-60, 1 Peter 2:2-10, John 14:1-14
Thomas can’t bear the thought of losing sight of Jesus. He asks a version of the question which does not quit after the death of a significant other: “Where are you?” Jesus’ response boils down to “Don’t worry. It will be ok. Believe me.” Did Jesus think that was an answer to Thomas’ question? It’s not.
But I trust Jesus when it comes to who God is and what life is about, so if he is still talking, I am still listening.
Jesus says pay attention to “the way, the truth and the life.” That means doing the things Jesus did: loving, helping and serving one another. That is “the way” which the gospels help us see. That is “the way” on which we learn the deepest truth about life. That is “the way” in which we will find and be found by God.
While we are on that way, we will undoubtedly need help. The way is not always easy. Jesus himself prayed often. The promise he makes is that whatever we might need while we are on that way — including how to find joy while living with the question that won’t quit — it is ours for the asking.
Easter peace.

I needed to hear that today. Thank you.
