Q: Would it have made a difference if Nixon had been criminally prosecuted?
A: One thousand percent.
There is much discussion about whether the DOJ should bring a criminal indictment against Donald Trump. There were similar discussions in 1974 after Watergate and they led to former President Nixon being pardoned.
Jill Wine-Banks believes Nixon should have been prosecuted. I agree and was convinced by this excerpt from her podcast interview of Heather Cox Richardson (Letters from an American.)
Jill Wine-Banks: “[I]f we had held (Richard Nixon) accountable… (meaning an) actual criminal indictment… do you think it would have made a difference to the how Donald Trump – if not the whole Republican party – (has) behaved?”
Heather Cox Richardson: “A thousand percent. I think if Nixon had been held to account— even if he weren’t found guilty, if he had been held to account — there would have been no Iran-Contra Affair, there would have been no Weapons of Mass Destruction and there would have been no election of Donald Trump. I think (the pardon of Richard Nixon) was a huge error…”
